A binary system, with its foundational concept of “on” and “off” stages, is deeply resonant with the essence of musical rhythm: the interplay of presence and absence, sound and silence, beat and rest. This dynamic mirrors the core logic of the digital world, where every moment represents a decision: “yes” or “no.” When multiple binary systems are layered, they form a network that becomes exponentially more complex, yet remains rooted in simplicity.

Similarly, the work I May Have Seen It layers several panels of PDLC foil, which can alternate between transparent and blurred states. Triggered by independent algorithms, these panels switch in a musical manner between the two states. This phenomenon parallels computational systems, where the orchestration of countless “on” and “off” states generates vast and intricate behaviors.

The layering challenges the concept of transparency. Binary systems, which seem clear, reducible, and predictable, transform into opaque and complex structures through layering. I May Have Seen It suggests a fleeting recognition—a moment of grasping something ephemeral, only for it to dissolve into ambiguity. The work invites listeners and observers to reflect on what can truly be known and what lies beyond perception.
